Betaine supplement makes strength athlete on diet lose more body fat

Strength athletes who lower their intake of energy lose more fat mass when they supplement with 2.5 grams of betaine daily. American researchers from Coastal Carolina University discovered this in a study in which two dozen female students participated as test subjects.

3.6. Elimination

The elimination half-life for betaine (50mg/kg oral intake) has been noted to be 14.38+/-7.17 hours after a single dose, and this was significantly increased to 41.17+/-13.50 after repeated dosing.[23]
There appears to be a very long elimination half-life with betaine, in accordance with its high bodily retention.
Urinary elimination of trimethylglycine (TMG) supplementation tends to be in the form of dimethylglycine (DMG), which is the methylation byproduct of trimethylglycine. Overall urinary excretion appears to be low as it has been measured at around 4% of oral intake (50mg/kg).[23] In the dosage range of 1,000-6,000mg in otherwise healthy persons when measured over the next 24 hours the urine accounts for 3.2-7.4% of orally ingested betaine (and excreted in the form of betaine, which increased with dose as DMG excretion was fairly stable).[22]
Both betaine and DMG are found in the urine, and DMG excretion rates do not seem to be responsive to changes in dietary supplementation (perhaps due to a limit on methylation), whereas betaine elimination goes up linearly with supplementation. It seems urinary excretion consists of a small amount of overall excretion when measured acutely, perhaps due to high bodily retention or fecal elimination.

IMPORTANT REMINDER - This is "betaine" as in trimethylglycine aka TMG, not "betaine" as in betaine HCL, which may help you if you have serious problems with your digestive system, but is otherwise (i.e. for 99% of the healthy population) a complete waste of money and will have NO effect whatsoever on your IGF-1 and body fat levels.

Androgenic responses to resistance exercise: effects of feeding and L-carnitine.

Abstract

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of 3 wk of L-carnitine L-tartrate (LCLT) supplementation and post-resistance-exercise (RE) feeding on hormonal and androgen receptor (AR) responses.

METHODS:

Ten resistance-trained men (mean+/-SD: age, 22+/-1 yr; mass, 86.3+/-15.3 kg; height, 181+/-11 cm) supplemented with LCLT (equivalent to 2 g of L-carnitine per day) or placebo (PL) for 21 d, provided muscle biopsies for AR determinations, then performed two RE protocols: one followed by water intake, and one followed by feeding (8 kcal.kg body mass, consisting of 56% carbohydrate, 16% protein, and 28% fat). RE protocols were randomized and included serial blood draws and a 1-h post-RE biopsy. After a 7-d washout period, subjects crossed over, and all experimental procedures were repeated.

RESULTS:

LCLT supplementation upregulated (P<0.05) preexercise AR content compared with PL (12.9+/-5.9 vs 11.2+/-4.0 au, respectively). RE increased (P<0.05) AR content compared with pre-RE values in the PL trial only. Post-RE feeding significantly increased AR content compared with baseline and water trials for both LCLT and PL. Serum total testosterone concentrations were suppressed (P<0.05) during feeding trials with respect to corresponding water and pre-RE values. Luteinizing hormone demonstrated subtle, yet significant changes in response to feeding and LCLT.

CONCLUSION:

In summary, these data demonstrated that: 1) feeding after RE increased AR content, which may result in increased testosterone uptake, and thus enhanced luteinizing hormone secretion via feedback mechanisms; and 2) LCLT supplementation upregulated AR content, which may promote recovery from RE.

Nutricost Pre-Workout Complex - Great Ingredients at a Great Price - Men's and Women's Formulas


I haven’t tried this pre-workout yet, but I really like the formulation of this product.
The dosing of the ingredients is great. The women’s formula has some of the ingredients lowered which is understandable.

Below are the ingredients.

Citrulline
Citrulline is converted to arginine in the body. Taking citrulline increases nitric oxide levels better than taking arginine. Citrulline also removes ammonia from the body increasing endurance and delaying muscle fatigue.

According to Flex Magazine:
"Citrulline malate elevates muscle ATP by 35% during exercise and increases the rate of creatine phosphate resynthesis by 20%."

Take 3-6g of L-citrulline or citrulline malate 30-60 minutes before workouts

Arginine
This amino acid enhances has been used by bodybuilders for sometime now for nitric oxide (NO) production.

It is thought to improve blood flow to exercising muscles. Increasing the delivery of nutrients, hormones, and oxygen to aid in recovery.

The typical NO boosting dosage is 3-5g of arginine three times per day. Besure to take one dose 30-40 minutes before exercise.

Ornithine
Ornithine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to arginine, leucine and glutamine. Ornithine increases nitric oxide production, energy, muscle recovery, and growth. In addition it's ability to help the body manage ammonia it blunts fatigue and muscle breakdown. Ornithine also supports immune function and fat burning.
Ornithine is often combined with arginine to boost growth hormone.

Taurine
Pulls fluid in the muscle expanding the tissue creating greater potential for growth. The second most abundant amino acid in muscle.

Betaine
Betaine is an amino acid (also called trimethylglycine) derived from beets. It aids joint and liver repair and liver protection.

Recent studies show that it boosts strength and power, increases growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels.

Betaine also increases the body's own production of creatine. 

The recommended dosage 1,500-3,000mg with pre- and post-workout meals.

Agmatine
Agmatine is the by-product of the breakdown of the amino acid arginine. As with arginine, agmatine boosts nitric oxide (NO) levels. It also boosts the release of insulin an anabolic hormone that increases muscle growth and dilates blood vessels to further boost blood flow.

The suggested dosage is 500 - 1,000mg 30-60 minutes before workouts.

Tyrosine
L-Tyrosine is a precursor to several key adrenal hormones, norepinephrine and epinephrine, as well as dopamine, a neurotransmitter.* By increasing dopamine, L-Tyrosine may increase focus and mental alertness and offset fatigue during exercise which makes a great tool in a pre workout product.*

Theanine
Theanine has been shown in clinical research to work synergesticly with caffeine to boost brain function.

Caffeine
A stimulant and effective fat burner due to its ability to increase the release of fat from fat cells, caffeine has been shown to boost strength and power output when taken one hour before workouts. 

For fat loss and weight management: 100-200mg between meals; mental acuity and focus: 50-200mg every couple of hours; strength and power: 200-400mg one hour before workouts

Norvaline
This derivative of the branched-chain amino acid valine has been shown to boost NO levels by more than 50% on its own. It works by inhibiting the enzyme arginase, which normally breaks down arginine in the body. Inhibition of this enzyme results in higher arginine levels, which can lead to higher NO levels.

Bioperine
Bioperine or Piperine is an active extract derived from black or long pepper.
It was developed to enhance nutrient absorption. Supplement companies typically add 5mg along with B6 to products to accomplish greater absorption increasing blood flow to the digestive tract.


Black Pepper is also one of the most available antioxidants. One teaspoon contains an ORAC value of 783.
