Tip For that Teardrop Quad

Focus on toes pointed out leg extensions and partial squats utilizing the top half of the movement. Full squats with chains and high box squats also are good options.

“The researchers had 10 males perform the squat jump while measuring the muscle activity of the vastus medialis (teardrop) and vastus lateralis (outer quad muscle) using electromyography (EMG). They reported in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise that during the first half of the squat, the muscle activity of the medialis was about 20 times that of the lateralis, while in the lower half of the squat the muscle activity of the medialis and lateralis was about equal.”

AST Sports Science Maximum Overload Training Principles - Sample Leg Day

  1. 4-6 reps per set. Increase weight if you exceed 6 reps.
  2. Train each body part once weekly.
  3. Use compound movement exercises.
  4. Low volume. 2 - 3 sets per exercise.
  5. Take 1 week off after every 8-10 weeks of training.
  6. Warm-up efficiently without inducing fatigue.
  7. Keep cardio short and intense (16-20 minutes in duration).
  8. If you perform cardio and weight training in the same session, do cardio after weights and not before.

SuppVersity - Nutrition and Exercise Science for Everyone: SuppVersity EMG Series - Best Leg Routine

SuppVersity - Nutrition and Exercise Science for Everyone: SuppVersity EMG Series - Gluteus maximus, Quadrice...: Actually, it would make as much sense to split this part of the SuppVersity EMG Series in two, if not three individual analyses, as it woul...

An EMG-optimized routine There is of course a myriad of ways of combining the individual exercises, my personal recommendation for overall leg development (based on EMG measures) would yet be as follows*:
  1. Squats - to parallel (70°), 6-10 reps
  2. Hack squats - to 90°, 8-12 reps
  3. Leg curls - peak contract. or partials, 10-12 reps Superset:
  4. Donkey calf raise - peak contract., 12 reps
  5. Seated calf raise - partials, 12 reps Optional
  6. Adductor machine - 12-15 reps
  7. Abductor machine - 12-15 reps
You may notice that I do not make volume (i.e. set) recommendations. This is due to the fact that I found that everyone has to find what works best for him / her in terms of optimal volume and training frequency. This may also change over time / according to lifestyle factors / nutrition and supplementation.

Need to develop those front calf muscles? DARD to the rescue.

Wherever you use it. The fitness center, at home or even at the office. This deceptively simple exercise device will help develop strength and stability in the ankles, knees and muscles of the upper and lower legs.

Due to the DARDTM isolating the tibialis anterior muscle in the front of the leg, it is an excellent device to help prevent and rehabilitate from painful shin splints.
